On 20 April 2026, the United Religions Initiative (URI) community gathered online for a powerful and timely conversation marking UN Mother Earth Day. As part of the Earth Healing Interfaith Webinar Series, this session brought together voices from across traditions and regions to reflect on our shared responsibility to care for the Earth.

A Moment to Reflect and Act

Mother Earth Day offers a meaningful opportunity to pause and reflect on our relationship with the natural world. This webinar invited participants not only to reflect, but also to consider how we can translate our values into action.

Across cultures and faith traditions, care for the Earth is a shared calling. The session highlighted how spiritual teachings can guide us toward more just, sustainable, and compassionate ways of living.

Insights from Dinesh Suna

The webinar featured Dinesh Suna from the World Council of Churches, who shared deep insights into the interconnected challenges of land, water, and food justice.

He reminded us that while humanity has existed for only a brief moment in the Earth’s long history, our impact has been profound—and often harmful. This reality calls for urgent and collective action.

Water as Life, Right, and Responsibility

A central theme of the session was water—not only as a natural resource, but as a sacred and shared responsibility.

Participants explored:

• the global inequalities in access to clean water
• the importance of protecting water as a human right
• the need to challenge systems that privatize or exploit natural resources

The concept of “Blue Communities” was introduced as a practical way for communities to commit to water justice and sustainability

Understanding Our Impact

The discussion also addressed the concept of Earth Overshoot Day, highlighting how humanity is currently consuming more resources than the Earth can regenerate each year.

This serves as a powerful reminder that:

Sustainable living is no longer optional—it is essential.

Participants reflected on how daily choices, community actions, and systemic change all play a role in restoring balance with the Earth

From Awareness to Action

A key message that emerged from the webinar was the need to move:
from awareness → to responsibility → to action

The time for reflection alone has passed — we are called to faithful, practical action.

Participants shared practical ways to contribute, including:

• reducing single-use plastics
• protecting local water sources
• promoting community-based environmental initiatives
• advocating for policy and systemic change

The conversation emphasized that faith communities have a unique and powerful role in leading this transformation.

Interconnected Challenges, Collective Responses

The session also highlighted how environmental issues are deeply connected to broader global challenges, including:

• inequality and poverty
• conflict and displacement
• food systems and agriculture
• access to sanitation

Addressing these challenges requires collaboration across sectors, regions, and traditions.
