Bell of Peace and Friendship

Inauguration on Mount Hochstein in East-Tirol/Austria

On a lovely sunny Saturday, July 25 th 2016, the Bell of Peace and Friendship has been inaugurated on the Mount Hochstein at Lienz/East-Tirol. Representatives of diverse religions, so as Christians, Muslims, Bahá’í, Hindus, Buddhists sent prayers and good wishes for peace and friendship to the entire world.

The idea of this bell-project, which you can see on the photo, came up to Elisabeth Duregger-Ziegler from the “URI CC Interreligious Team East-Tirol” and the “Association Education brings peace” 11 years ago at the 60-years commemoration of the massacre to the Cossacks. She wanted to set a sign of peace.

And she managed to interest a lot of people to help and realize this project. With admirable endurance she fought against all obstacles, and so it was a great success for her and all those helpers - the Bell Foundry forming the bell, the carpenters building up the tower, the forges making the iron cover and cage for the stones -  when the bell could be erected on the Mountain. Tears came to her eyes seeing everything well done. And also the more than 120 people who gathered for this event hardly couldn’t keep their tears – it was overwhelming.

Elisabeth gathered a lot of money from friends and not to speak about the manpower and material some firms gave to the project. But most of the budget came from herself, and so she hopes, that she will find some more donors to cover the expenses, also by selling “Candles of Peace” and incense herbs.

From URI Europe Marianne Horling was there to bring greetings and also some stones from the home countries of the board-members. Under the bell with the inscription “For Peace and Friendship” and the symbols of 12 different religions, there is a platform, where stones from all over the world lay on, and also people can place stones into the cages around. There are even stones from sacred places: one is from Mecca, one is from Jerusalem, one from Stonehenge. People like to ring the bell and to send good wishes to all over the world.
